Welcome back to Keys and First Appearances. Last week I took a look at first appearances of Spawn characters in comics. In most opinions, not all of these are worth investing but some have to be right?
We know we have a new movie coming, and I wouldn’t count out a Spawn series at some point. The material is there and written just waiting for someone to get the ok from Todd. That said we also know that almost every comic(at least above 100) is 10.00 or more, mostly more. So what comics are worth a closer look?
Below is a short breakdown of my favorite comics worthy of SPECULATION or INVESTING

Newsstand only here for me. The book is iconic and will only grow more so as a new generation is introduced to Spawn. That said the print run is also bonkers high. I know show dealers get a standard 10 or 20 bucks for a nice copy, but thats at a show, impulse buy for someone. There is no real long term play on the direct, even in 9.8 there are just too many. How many? As of February 1st there were NINE THOUSAND NINE HUNDRED AND SIXTY SIX Universal copies on the census. I needed to spell it out there so folks did not think it was a typo. Of that almost 10K, 6 are perfect 10s, 66 are 9.9s and over 5,000 are 9.8s, over 2K are 9.6 and there is a lone 1.8 and a .5 slab out there.
This houses the first Capullo work on Spawn and while the print run may be massive. I wonder how many truly NM or nicer copies are out there? There’s 32 9.8s on the CGC Census, which might sound like a lot, but Capullo is “the other Spawn cover artist”. Spawn’s fan base is not going anywhere, neither is Capullo. Preferably Newsstand here again, though a 9.8 for short money or even raw copies from the dollar bin would be tough for me to turn down.
The Freak is a character I would love to see, preferably in a Spawn series done right. As with all these pre issue 100 Spawns, I like the Newsstand here or one of the 28(for now) 9.8s.
Jessica Priest first appearance(cameo) is a cheap enough gamble right now with raw copies under the 20.00 mark.
Gunslinger Spawn is a fan favorite, the first full in issue 174 and second in 175 are both “up there” as far as Spawn comics go, while this cameo remains an “under $20” and another seemingly attractive spec play in true high grade.
Nyx’s first appearance is on the rise, copies are still out there though not on Ebay. Could be a sign of things to come. If I see this in the back issue bins for 20 or less, I’m buying.
Gunslinger Spawn has me on the fence. Prices seem outrageous on books from the 150-250 section of the run, but 90% of that price is from collectors fighting for the copies that are out there. This is also not a new revelation, this was a 50.00 book raw 5 years ago, I don’t think we are going to see the price go down. That all said, will the price go up? With 9.8s commanding over $200 and nice raw examples hitting over 100 as of a couple weeks ago, I’m not sure if this is the ceiling or just part of the ride.
I’m not usually a big fan of milestone issues as the print run is usually massive. The first and 2nd prints are easily found, while the 3rd and 4th prints seem to have a lot lower distribution and not to many exist online right now. If the newest She Spawn sticks around, the later printings could be the way to go here. I know folks are going to say there are a TON of covers and all of that, but I think back to TWD #100 when for a good few years they were littering dollar bins and were never more than cover. By the time Negan was teased for the AMC show, sets were bringing an average of 10.00 an issue with the regular cover getting slightly more. This also boasts a 7.99 cover price which could keep copies from hitting the dollar bins, but I can certainly see retailers who went heavy with their order needing to liquidate which means discount. I keep my eyes peeled for the later print and will also be watching for discount copies to hit the market.
Rust 1 (Regular & Variant Covers)
I see the appeal of Malibu Sun #13, but I do not agree with the price. It was touted for a long time as the first published Image of Spawn and Rust is somewhat known, I really believe over the next few years the price on both the regular and variant foil cover will start to climb.
Well, that wraps up this Spawn Comic Book First Appearances List make sure to keep an eye on the FIRST APPEARANCES AND KEYS Category here on CBSI for more awesome comic resources!!
