Commanders' Cameron Tom: Signed by Commanders
Rotowire
Tom was signed by Washington on Friday in conjunction with the release of J.C. Hassenauer, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
The 6-foot-2 offensive lineman will jump into a depth role at center for the Commanders as they move on from Hassenauer. Tom was with the Eagles and Chargers organizations during the 2023 campaign and is approaching his eighth NFL season.

Commanders' Marcus Mariota: Out again Sunday
Rotowire
Mariota (groin) will miss Sunday's preseason finale against the Patriots but is trending toward fully practicing next week, Ben Standig of The Athletic reports.
While the backup quarterback will miss his second preseason matchup in a row, he should be back to practice next week in preparation for Washington's season opener against the Bucs on Sept. 8. Although fellow Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels has been announced the starter ahead of the season, Mariota's health is still relevant considering he'll serve as the rookie second overall pick's primary backup to open 2024.

Commanders' Clelin Ferrell: Likely for opener despite swelling
Rotowire
Head coach Dan Quinn said Friday that Ferrell was dealing with knee swelling during fall camp but will be ready for the season opener, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
Quinn added that Ferrell would have played this week if it were the regular season, hinting that he'll not appear in Sunday's preseason closer against the Patriots. The 6-foot-4 defensive end is still primed to start in Washington's season opener against the Bucs after being acquired via trade by the Commanders in March.

Commanders' Sam Hartman: Finally back practicing
Rotowire
Hartman (shoulder) was back practicing Friday, Ben Standig of The Athletic reports.
Hartman hurt his shoulder during Washington's 20-17 loss to the Jets in the Commanders' preseason opener Aug. 10. He'll return to the practice field just two days out from the team's final preseason matchup versus the Patriots. If active Sunday, the rookie quarterback will need to play at a high level if he wants to elevate himself from what will likely be a practice-squad spot this season.

Commanders' Jayden Daniels: Won't play Sunday
Rotowire
Daniels will not play in the Commanders' preseason finale against the Patriots on Sunday night, Ben Standig of The Athletic reports.
Daniels will rest along with a number of the Commanders' other locked-in starters. The No. 2 overall pick in April's draft, Daniels wraps up his preseason having completed 12 of 15 passes for 123 scoreless yards and a 3-16-1 rushing line. The next time we see Daniels will be Week 1 in Tampa Bay. He's shaping up as a fringe QB1/2 in fantasy drafts.

Commanders' Luke McCaffrey: Not separating from other WRs
Rotowire
McCaffrey hasn't emerged as an obvious top-four wide receiver to open the season for Washington, John Keim of ESPN.com reports.
Even after the Commanders' trade of Jahan Dotson this week, McCaffrey hasn't earned a starting role in Washington. It sounds like Dyami Brown and Olamide Zaccheaus are pushing for playing time behind Terry McLaurin, and even slot man Jamison Crowder could be in the mix. McCaffrey is relatively new to the wide receiver position after playing it for just two seasons. If McCaffrey doesn't open the season in three-wide sets, it's not out of the question that he finishes 2024 in a prominent role.

Commanders' Kazmeir Allen: Draws Deebo comp from OC
Rotowire
Commanders OC Kliff Kingsbury mentioned that Allen's "explosive" traits remind him of Deebo Samuel, Ben Standig of The Athletic reports.
Listed as a wide receiver, Allen has been getting reps out of the backfield in Washington. "He's a guy that we could see similar -- I'm not comparing -- but Deebo type role to move him around, do different things," Kingsbury said, via John Keim of ESPN.com. "He has that type of explosiveness and ability to play in the slot or you can hand it to him." Allen went undrafted out of UCLA last year and spent much of 2023 on the Commanders' practice squad. He has four carries for 15 yards and a fumble this preseason, adding one catch for 12 yards on two targets. Washington's wideout room is wide open behind Terry McLaurin following Thursday's trade of Jahan Dotson to the Eagles.

Commanders' Luke McCaffrey: Facing less snap competition
Rotowire
McCaffrey has less competition for playing time after the Commanders traded Jahan Dotson to the Eagles on Thursday.
McCaffrey strictly worked with Washington's second- and third-string offenses in the first two preseason games, but a lack of talent at WR behind Terry McLaurin suggests it may not be long before the rookie third-round pick gets regular playing time. Dyami Brown and Olamide Zaccheaus have been splitting perimeter snaps opposite McLaurin on the first-team offense, with Dotson getting most of the slot work pre-trade. McCaffrey has worked both outside and inside this summer, and at 6-foot-2 with 4.46 speed he isn't necessarily limited to the slot.

Commanders' Cade York: Traded to Washington
Rotowire
The Commanders acquired York from the Browns on Thursday in exchange for a conditional 2025 seventh-round pick, John Keim of ESPN.com reports.
Washington then waived Riley Patterson, leaving York as the only kicker on their roster. Meanwhile, Dustin Hopkins (undisclosed) is left as the lone kicker for Cleveland, suggesting the team isn't worried that his recent minor injury will affect his Week 1 availability. The Browns took York in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft, but he was waived the following preseason after missing eight field-goal attempts during his rookie season. He then spent time with the Giants and Titans before landing back in Cleveland this spring.
