First of all, I love the bright green dyed edges and the cut out stenciled cover of this book. The beginning has a short but comprehensive section on science, botany, cannabis culture and etiquette. Following that, the bulk of the book is filled with beautifully detailed identification photos along with basic information on many different strains of marijuana. It’s a fabulous coffee table book to lazily flip through. I especially like that it has a wellspring of knowledge all in small sections so the reader is not forced to read huge chunks at once. It’s a perfect gift for the marijuana enthusiast in your life. 4 stars.

Good come starter

I originally spotted this in an Urban Outfitters for $35 and thought
Screw that price
But damn if these photos aren't incredible

It's near impossible to contain all the possible strains in this book, but it serves it's purpose.

A good intro to bud and it's strains, clear distinctions of Sativa vs Indica and the hybrids in between, and just a good read overall for the aspiring stoner

My goal was to git a brief introduction to what people currently through about more of the cultivation and science side of Marijuana. The strain compendium / field guide part of this was less interesting to me. The first 50 pages of so of this book fulfilled my need. Probably due to the field guide being so picture heavy the intro material might have been somewhat overly glossily laid out.

Primarily a great encyclopedia of the myriad strains, I especially enjoyed the introductory portion which detailed the botanical elements and characteristics of the plant itself. A good resource for the new, seasoned smoker, or anyone just curious to learn more about cannabis.

This is a gorgeous book, truly a feast for the eyes.

There is a short overview at the beginning that gives some historical context for cannabis and its use. I found the section on landraces (ancient cannabis plants that occur naturally and adapt to particular regions) especially interesting.

Strains are listed alphabetically, each with a beautiful, magnified photo of a bud, along with a description of the strain, lineage, characteristics, effects, and top medical uses. Kind of like a wine-tasting guide, but for pot.

I'm not much of a smoker, so I have very little personal experience to draw upon, but I was intrigued by many of these strains and am looking forward to experimenting.

I received this book through Goodreads First Reads.

First off, this is a gorgeous book as object. The cover is really interesting, including die-cut lettering and a nice transparent cover (perhaps to preserve the book?), and the book is filled with high quality, high resolution photos.

The book's main project seems to be to legitimize the field of marijuana consumption, as this book is written much like a first timer's guide to wine and beer. Different strains are flavor and effect profiled, and full page photographs accompany each description. The book is a little silly at times--complete with "100 Bona Fide Cannabis Terms" (...what...)--but overall is a nice beginning to legitimizing this emerging field.
